They are industrious little bugs digging through hard soil and even moving pebbles out of the way.<br />
They are known as the hardest working insects in a garden.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOVjCxsg2hL9XJAX5VTlZhFt0SDoOGpgYBwd89WpUQ8qthyoSoKhBM4yq6DFH5-UysGDXGFG7ImlIJftkSKufBi2eGvWrJ7xqriMzVFu7i5B8vxFhX5jmhk1daFF4aqZ1xyQmBwfOesnc/s1600/IMG_5159.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="341" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOVjCxsg2hL9XJAX5VTlZhFt0SDoOGpgYBwd89WpUQ8qthyoSoKhBM4yq6DFH5-UysGDXGFG7ImlIJftkSKufBi2eGvWrJ7xqriMzVFu7i5B8vxFhX5jmhk1daFF4aqZ1xyQmBwfOesnc/s400/IMG_5159.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
Once they've dug a deep enough hole, the search for a grasshopper or other similar insect and paralyze it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLryUC6qBC4Hr60AJlHo8LcNXB9XCDJij_IVeHiZEhZV-A7F-4EC_72zeDp17EEjEv3G_OLlqkmGOntL2AJSxPCNQ36we2i1GSSIW6bDab1FicNsO-kjKXlZNy54g8ty1LstEM_tollcI/s1600/IMG_5157.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLryUC6qBC4Hr60AJlHo8LcNXB9XCDJij_IVeHiZEhZV-A7F-4EC_72zeDp17EEjEv3G_OLlqkmGOntL2AJSxPCNQ36we2i1GSSIW6bDab1FicNsO-kjKXlZNy54g8ty1LstEM_tollcI/s400/IMG_5157.JPG" width="388" /></a></div>
<br />
Then they take their prey into the hole they just dug and lay eggs on their victim so when the eggs hatch, they have something to feed on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOttJ-iRKmt316-qoou2nQbXmjbt2AvOOdbdBB4EarjWRT_Q2SSj5W2smQSxfYGiA586Xh5k59BMO6MaMQ17xoYhNUTcCR_me3Q03X6qiXoPOCgSjTBuswwJEGxNa-JrbBGC0hSm9iNAI/s1600/IMG_5158.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOttJ-iRKmt316-qoou2nQbXmjbt2AvOOdbdBB4EarjWRT_Q2SSj5W2smQSxfYGiA586Xh5k59BMO6MaMQ17xoYhNUTcCR_me3Q03X6qiXoPOCgSjTBuswwJEGxNa-JrbBGC0hSm9iNAI/s400/IMG_5158.JPG" width="397" /></a></div>
<br />
They are completely harmless to humans and pets and are beneficial to a garden.<br />
When I walk by, they buzz a little louder and when I've passed by, go back to digging.<br />
<br />
Lucy sits down beside them and they aren't bothered by her one bit and neither is she.<br />
<br />

It isn't native to Canada. It's an invasive species that came from Europe where it's also called Zombie Weed.<br />
<br />
To some gardeners, it's considered an obnoxious weed much like dandelions because they are difficult to eradicate.<br />
However I like dandelions and bellflowers so they can both happily grow in my garden.<br />
<br />
Lucy loves to eat the leaves of this plant. She searches them out and then spends her time leisurely pulling off the leaves and munching on them like potato chips.<br />
<br />
I've seen deer search out this plant too and devour the leaves in the same manner.<br />
<br />
As the tale goes, Rapunzel got her name from this plant: campanula rapunculoides. Her father picked this wildflower from the castle of the evil witch and planted it in his garden where it grew in abundance.<br />
<br />
Well, it grows in abundance here too and I think it's beautiful and Lucy thinks it's tasty.<br />

This fellow was walking up our road with a doe. They were standing in front of the bushes in full sunlight but by the time the camera was found, well, you know the rest. However this photo isn't too shabby.<br />
<br />
I've been noticing the tops of the raspberry canes near our driveway have been nibbled away so perhaps these two deer are going to be permanent neighbours.<br />

I sure hope so.Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14013998783032868744noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8345116980656936582.post-44923223659033065752015-07-02T22:00:00.001-04:002015-07-02T22:00:56.749-04:00Moon rise<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
After dinner today, we took Lucy for a long walk along the Wharf in town. While the setting sun was beautiful shining on the Bay, it was also completely obnoxious. We could barley see where we were walking with our arms held over our heads shielding our eyes from the bright sunlight. Other walkers were doing the same too.<br />
<br />
On our way home in the car with our sun visors flipped downwards, we wondered why some people will only consider having a cottage with a western exposure. A setting sun is blinding!<br />
<br />
When we got home, we poured out a glass of wine and sat out on the front deck which has an eastern exposure and this is what we saw...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkTybnoZhIJSg87mh_scswBdH8MG3o6CiSSF7ai7cWJ_DLSimTHXg-UHGXNnQVMt4mAe0tRonCM1bjhBHzJQ1JvSAlXqQh_wV6QkbahcQVcl-xv21HbNjrhyjBL90pyexM-hn6TFJGTZA/s1600/DSCN6735.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkTybnoZhIJSg87mh_scswBdH8MG3o6CiSSF7ai7cWJ_DLSimTHXg-UHGXNnQVMt4mAe0tRonCM1bjhBHzJQ1JvSAlXqQh_wV6QkbahcQVcl-xv21HbNjrhyjBL90pyexM-hn6TFJGTZA/s640/DSCN6735.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The moon was rising like a huge orange ball of cheese. The reflection in the water is more accurate of the true colour. For some reason, my camera cannot capture the moon accurately but I suppose it's more the fault of the operator.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1dzkg2JXkOrkxn9rUNHWcR9ZU3qVXW0YJ02sW1ZnNpvunsFGP-gktAMeEZWsLSZIPmnsnVgO_TnurG_unyTK-R5cTs2astTavaRp7QO0RqLlPAUqmLLVldDZ7TwaxdeaovUBNV5Wgv78/s1600/DSCN6739.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1dzkg2JXkOrkxn9rUNHWcR9ZU3qVXW0YJ02sW1ZnNpvunsFGP-gktAMeEZWsLSZIPmnsnVgO_TnurG_unyTK-R5cTs2astTavaRp7QO0RqLlPAUqmLLVldDZ7TwaxdeaovUBNV5Wgv78/s640/DSCN6739.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

At any rate it rose so magnificently over the island and it wasn't blinding at all.<br />

Yesterday afternoon while sitting upstairs on the deck, I heard a rustling and a low, and different, quacking sound coming from along the shore.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went down to investigate and to my surprise, it was Muriel with 7 newly hatched babies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixBroGXVF50f4_ELe-oCAyArH7t7Jpc_K-INxHmZY_G82QIO__uiXAyEXnH67LP3gJM-STtygpnkC7bzLxzjeLmZw9SKBzLxYFhojpujeQCdda60sQ4Fx6eQPSiB7BQbmWKzT1yPCV12k/s1600/DSCN6704.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixBroGXVF50f4_ELe-oCAyArH7t7Jpc_K-INxHmZY_G82QIO__uiXAyEXnH67LP3gJM-STtygpnkC7bzLxzjeLmZw9SKBzLxYFhojpujeQCdda60sQ4Fx6eQPSiB7BQbmWKzT1yPCV12k/s640/DSCN6704.JPG" width="590" /></a></div>
<br />
I've seen her at this same spot every evening for at least the past three weeks and thought her nest might be nearby.<br />
It turns out, it was in the tall ferns beside our boathouse.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo4q_dePKuQIZlv-Xnin3Q3qkLNrYFzBQcMYQ8z21TKclI3_PIhuRgeypvTlAv43eVr3GyaiUDm4QUCRYXnP_WrVnD288gBeSt-2PCVQRK-YSd6ohSWRatre_0KfBLO5NwKJ8ejaTMXck/s1600/DSCN6728.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo4q_dePKuQIZlv-Xnin3Q3qkLNrYFzBQcMYQ8z21TKclI3_PIhuRgeypvTlAv43eVr3GyaiUDm4QUCRYXnP_WrVnD288gBeSt-2PCVQRK-YSd6ohSWRatre_0KfBLO5NwKJ8ejaTMXck/s640/DSCN6728.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I guess her different quacking sound was to call them out of the ferns and to her side in the water.<br />
<br />
I tossed out a little bit of seed for her and she gobbled it up. Her ducklings stayed behind her and weren't making the familiar peeping sound just yet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgetdGNeNyzkvbl84_Hkjk1kbjSEZLt7RmtCZdOWZW6Re4Af-Z1Ye0RiWf2-YHMVURQf2zUugwfcFBGOx4s1lhXRQS2Q-ajKPhj6sUkfX1KYVeZT2pUTUvqv0qNTBNYl7wSUt9qZsDEsG4/s1600/DSCN6706.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgetdGNeNyzkvbl84_Hkjk1kbjSEZLt7RmtCZdOWZW6Re4Af-Z1Ye0RiWf2-YHMVURQf2zUugwfcFBGOx4s1lhXRQS2Q-ajKPhj6sUkfX1KYVeZT2pUTUvqv0qNTBNYl7wSUt9qZsDEsG4/s640/DSCN6706.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The babies watched their mum feed and copied her. They also began making the familiar peeping sound.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqLYXlJWWuwABWon-XCDJWsrH5ab_UtIZCPbY2P9PUenHtNMw8AhKI6YlGrx-al1VGSB6GplDvKPZmF-MlpCEaoSiELNuaQmxNE-YoStus6e7kypTeC_OfXd_xpIPWTfkouPlijecjdNM/s1600/DSCN6707.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqLYXlJWWuwABWon-XCDJWsrH5ab_UtIZCPbY2P9PUenHtNMw8AhKI6YlGrx-al1VGSB6GplDvKPZmF-MlpCEaoSiELNuaQmxNE-YoStus6e7kypTeC_OfXd_xpIPWTfkouPlijecjdNM/s640/DSCN6707.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It didn't take long for these new little lives adapt to their environment. I guess that's why there's the term "a duck takes to water".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibhHuMpyJSx5Z_zrxJ03tx3BjT7F55NDDQ4YMXw_fuOomZCSWLF7F9jRcsFYKzFEiT8FF8vmc7RXtd2vI__h7pUc_xuQdtPP_C6bswKX2L_Y20_VHgCfibFJh811jPVCXTLUze1zbk8WE/s1600/DSCN6718.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibhHuMpyJSx5Z_zrxJ03tx3BjT7F55NDDQ4YMXw_fuOomZCSWLF7F9jRcsFYKzFEiT8FF8vmc7RXtd2vI__h7pUc_xuQdtPP_C6bswKX2L_Y20_VHgCfibFJh811jPVCXTLUze1zbk8WE/s640/DSCN6718.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now they have a huge battle for survival.<br />
There's a massive snapping turtle at the end of the bay that regularly cruises the shoreline.<br />
A Blue Heron also scopes out potential food on the shoreline on a daily basis as it sits motionless in shallow water. And of course there are big fish that will snatch a duckling from underneath the surface, while owls and hawks will swoop down from above.<br />
<br />
Human activity, dogs, boats…you name it also pose threat.<br />
In a few weeks the "Duck Whisperer" (a.k.a. the neighbours nephew) will be here and perhaps he can aid as guardian for these precious little lives.<br />

For quite a few days lately, there have been loons calling in our bay. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This morning I was able to capture their haunting call using my little camera. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are two calls in the following video.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyMOg4mjDvrlRgbEfCoNbRkegghElnrG023eqHfEiH38o0ZGIPKOtRJHrweCeLwt9xFOUv2d0IRE3vDvwcY2Q' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
One loon seemed to be calling another. When the other loon arrived, the two danced around on the water flapping their wings, then began bobbing up and down and finally went underwater. Maybe they were doing an Ester Williams type of synchronized swim thing.<br />
At any rate, this extremely poor quality video shows them frolicking just above the pine branch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dx84ckaB3hhp0Vs5lCACzmdQ7v8xg3r75GjVgU128NcajAb8y7f7bvP4SXv0Lz14_SEFeNH5l2PVHDctijdrg' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Their call sure is haunting and they are truly magnificent creatures.Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14013998783032868744noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8345116980656936582.post-24367210799054827742015-06-19T13:31:00.002-04:002015-06-19T13:31:52.175-04:00Wharf walkingIt was such a lovely day today, we stopped to go for a walk along the wharf in town.<br />
<br />
There was a lovely scent coming from the flowers blooming in the bushes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3pL-ylA1KIQ-VXQ3MnRQSlNjFNOP7S3CY1CVNW3iRvCxtDe025W5CiWeIB-pKEmlcnEqo0ae1EKkQIPjOto5dsDFnIDf4MwyXo2xFuFndtAMDEP1Xzhe3NmU2QHC4YueoOUCFwu-zLHw/s1600/IMG_1743+copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3pL-ylA1KIQ-VXQ3MnRQSlNjFNOP7S3CY1CVNW3iRvCxtDe025W5CiWeIB-pKEmlcnEqo0ae1EKkQIPjOto5dsDFnIDf4MwyXo2xFuFndtAMDEP1Xzhe3NmU2QHC4YueoOUCFwu-zLHw/s640/IMG_1743+copy.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In the small marsh area, a red-winged blackbird was singing as it sat on top on one of the small trees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIw2_DJ8eCBIjp90Rn2d-0mgLLWhIVN4tSlMhFbR_W2ae-dgnHngu0g38cjXxDFpnseIAAaniwgraslU8NpQRMmj5vPwJDHwkueoHyO3yeOjdmOI5HyfnpksN494Avt0BOS4mPkcabOKw/s1600/IMG_1753+copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="368" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIw2_DJ8eCBIjp90Rn2d-0mgLLWhIVN4tSlMhFbR_W2ae-dgnHngu0g38cjXxDFpnseIAAaniwgraslU8NpQRMmj5vPwJDHwkueoHyO3yeOjdmOI5HyfnpksN494Avt0BOS4mPkcabOKw/s640/IMG_1753+copy.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And over by the town dock, the Segwun was busy taking passengers out for a cruise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I guess she's in <i>heat</i> again, although I doubt in the duck world it's called <i>heat</i> as it is in the canine world.<br />
<br />
At any rate, poor Muriel has been nearly drowned several times as she has become the 'town bicycle' in that everyone is trying to ride her.<br />
<br />
Yesterday I noticed a male Mallard watching the goings on from our boathouse roof deck. It's a good spotting location.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSOGn_VGrui7xQbURlNP-pblVyn7IkOqHWMrgTqxB5JcFK0lNhyImKb5QPOMwfzflnWCcrnPOgG9q_w0BB00mvmJ04X6LFFqbNrSR_jUzylATXuClnawQibnrRV8hxnaFaxEEjOl3sWMk/s1600/DSCN6699.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSOGn_VGrui7xQbURlNP-pblVyn7IkOqHWMrgTqxB5JcFK0lNhyImKb5QPOMwfzflnWCcrnPOgG9q_w0BB00mvmJ04X6LFFqbNrSR_jUzylATXuClnawQibnrRV8hxnaFaxEEjOl3sWMk/s640/DSCN6699.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
He marched back and forth just waiting to make his 'moves' on poor unsuspecting Muriel who was paddling peacefully just below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsM8H-MC64tcx7SlMY4nNpSuplep4SAbhSZTsAy5AIzOfEtYnN8LihPqI5rHoqXxhV4knVwvqEg8DIcRBbzo0_LaWblQ5IHP4-4iCXbcxR29HtcMT4NQCfHXtJQHWRRhVNqMvEc4sUOe4/s1600/DSCN6697.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsM8H-MC64tcx7SlMY4nNpSuplep4SAbhSZTsAy5AIzOfEtYnN8LihPqI5rHoqXxhV4knVwvqEg8DIcRBbzo0_LaWblQ5IHP4-4iCXbcxR29HtcMT4NQCfHXtJQHWRRhVNqMvEc4sUOe4/s640/DSCN6697.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Just look at him peering over the edge as he's stalking dear sweet Muriel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVfnP-mVUEysB3Ot_l1DUBMywNExvN5kCSUpg493TMkuZ7yW6vNKIlYL_IZbtKiJbTZJWPj1fgueEkGjzajinuhCXyh7TynrgIwkJVve7_Cpp_h0s4zyoWyfhpH_pI6vssyhenPcrPJeE/s1600/DSCN6701.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVfnP-mVUEysB3Ot_l1DUBMywNExvN5kCSUpg493TMkuZ7yW6vNKIlYL_IZbtKiJbTZJWPj1fgueEkGjzajinuhCXyh7TynrgIwkJVve7_Cpp_h0s4zyoWyfhpH_pI6vssyhenPcrPJeE/s640/DSCN6701.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Later in the day when we went to town, Muriel was walking along our roadway with a male mallard in pursuit. He wouldn't even get out of the way of our car.<br />

After dinner Saturday night, the Wenonah II came in the bay.</div>

<br />
It was such a lovely evening. Perfect for an evening cruise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
When it got near the end of the bay, the ship turned around.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It passed right in front of our boathouse.<br />
Our grandchildren were here so they had a front row seat on the boathouse roof deck.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh3Ql4y9f1VRO59c9MG2L5xVl2DYqdiUULfq0XdPpTEq9mBe7ZfWlmf7YC2p2929SHs47PbbOD89CP9BImcQY3H_Y4VTF6OwIsX02oW9sfXhQvjOIYyhNgQJuHol4PboLrVlT4ay2lXLs/s1600/DSCN6694.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh3Ql4y9f1VRO59c9MG2L5xVl2DYqdiUULfq0XdPpTEq9mBe7ZfWlmf7YC2p2929SHs47PbbOD89CP9BImcQY3H_Y4VTF6OwIsX02oW9sfXhQvjOIYyhNgQJuHol4PboLrVlT4ay2lXLs/s640/DSCN6694.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then it headed out to the open part of the lake to continue the evening cruise.<br />
<br />

Then quite by coincidence the same day, that fellow was nearby cutting and pruning another neighbours trees, so I stopped and got his business card.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_P6Q9mxWDT3JQK6Y11bp4qaPuFChKSeuq6o3Yfpr3H7SD6Yckj0og7PHWuqHguYLkd_ABp2ht6Fopoq4sLdvlS5X7hzaq1fjdd7zn_vu4rfu4l2OHYaaiNow6qk2_IxzQce7OU3jq8Vo/s1600/IMG_5134.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_P6Q9mxWDT3JQK6Y11bp4qaPuFChKSeuq6o3Yfpr3H7SD6Yckj0og7PHWuqHguYLkd_ABp2ht6Fopoq4sLdvlS5X7hzaq1fjdd7zn_vu4rfu4l2OHYaaiNow6qk2_IxzQce7OU3jq8Vo/s640/IMG_5134.JPG" width="384" /></a></div>
<br />
His method of painting is pointillism, which is small dots of colour. Impressionist artists like Seurat and Signac used that method.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_qkzhR64ngQxJXgMbf4ZtaxansWuwK9hLhMfQbeqjDdVrs2X-ee3drI_qspbnoFSEk0NcvTZ7RwoMYFObEVHOUcZLVJSu_NasKgiAHzWb0pG4HKHJxKQqOxPGDw-PEiS7GMRLfvijjNk/s1600/IMG_5136.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_qkzhR64ngQxJXgMbf4ZtaxansWuwK9hLhMfQbeqjDdVrs2X-ee3drI_qspbnoFSEk0NcvTZ7RwoMYFObEVHOUcZLVJSu_NasKgiAHzWb0pG4HKHJxKQqOxPGDw-PEiS7GMRLfvijjNk/s640/IMG_5136.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
To advertise his tree cutting service, he has also applied his business card art to his truck. <br />
It looks so cool when you see it on the highway. It's like the forest is driving by.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvj01pgsJYLfZPJJvw90KJ9uBmxF_iOCbl__W14RZUHUVoUBlnuvdmlEmXXGsqaFcIfcpi8htncHAFcuphdLyM9hnfISWox7lAGAtMpVbIXlszf9l8wSlqrBGtUy9xB0-qYi7BbZCGOAs/s1600/IMG_5133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvj01pgsJYLfZPJJvw90KJ9uBmxF_iOCbl__W14RZUHUVoUBlnuvdmlEmXXGsqaFcIfcpi8htncHAFcuphdLyM9hnfISWox7lAGAtMpVbIXlszf9l8wSlqrBGtUy9xB0-qYi7BbZCGOAs/s640/IMG_5133.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
I think my neighbour ought to hire this fellow to cut down his trees and then have him paint his boat with the same art.<br />
That way, when he goes out on the lake and disengages the muffler to give 'er, his boat will be cleverly disguised as the distant shoreline. Bwahahahahaha!Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14013998783032868744noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8345116980656936582.post-74176635810563825092015-05-28T15:44:00.002-04:002015-05-28T15:44:36.996-04:00Back in BusinessTo my surprise this afternoon, the Wenonah II was sailing way out on the lake.<br />

When the ships sail again, summer has truly arrived.Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14013998783032868744noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8345116980656936582.post-14462826575490176292015-05-27T06:51:00.000-04:002015-05-27T06:51:14.083-04:00Huckleberry Rock CutIn 1961 the road from Bracebridge to Port Carling was reconstructed. Originally it went beside the lake through the tiny hamlet of Milford Bay. A rocky hill nearby was blasted to make way for the new section of hwy118.<br />
In 1962 the by-pass was opened and everyone could marvel at the beautiful pink granite walls that flanked the highway,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdOvEV7RfD4HHpVkxGjwBajohwCgHwjzrnobm71lvDOXIVL3PnsG8uTVcA632DVTbObvu-vAHUE8jhbvg661pVRLmTYr-oYIjrtmc6JITa5O5qs3qOHajj72VQZXQ4BldDMjo-A0-TYRw/s1600/IMG_5129.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="330" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdOvEV7RfD4HHpVkxGjwBajohwCgHwjzrnobm71lvDOXIVL3PnsG8uTVcA632DVTbObvu-vAHUE8jhbvg661pVRLmTYr-oYIjrtmc6JITa5O5qs3qOHajj72VQZXQ4BldDMjo-A0-TYRw/s640/IMG_5129.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
There's a public trail on top of the rock cut. Apparently the view from there overlooking the lake is breathtaking.<br />
<br />
Note to self: take the time this summer to walk the trail and get some photos.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT0gmEQKp8C07HVLr2y5XAj4-yUfVrOacAZB7-S539Nzd7P1AkJ5jgo0L2i6yg7OweIgYj4_zXclEAMnKJ8GeQqRFb5xx0IFHRHEChqNJgBHZoe5CS7qUNKr7HsQLPTf92T-uDNLiSIxU/s1600/IMG_5130.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="332" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT0gmEQKp8C07HVLr2y5XAj4-yUfVrOacAZB7-S539Nzd7P1AkJ5jgo0L2i6yg7OweIgYj4_zXclEAMnKJ8GeQqRFb5xx0IFHRHEChqNJgBHZoe5CS7qUNKr7HsQLPTf92T-uDNLiSIxU/s640/IMG_5130.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The marks from the blasting drills are cleverly concealed on the 40' high walls of granite. And because the rock cut is on a curve, when entering from either side it feels like you are driving into another worldly dimension.<br />
<br />

<br />
What I think is strange here though, are the road markings. When driving northbound, one can pass even though it's a blind corner and on a hill.<br />

And when it's quiet, wildlife comes to visit.<br />
<br />
Tonight we were visited by some big birds.<br />
<br />
The first one that came was big turkey.<br />
A hen.<br />
She rolled in the freshly placed topsoil surrounding the new patio stones we so painstakingly (emphasis on the word pain…as in back pain) laid on the old driveway.<br />
<br />
Lucy had been rolling in it earlier. There must be something so irresistible in the soil.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7F3IBbTw4_WqGLIg2vuaBOLxWYn3BLHI6M6pne8hYBcZ-fQIRMe8YfcN7j3zu1sEk5jfRhIr4Q50bLEDxvLBc12mr62Q8g_CBks78Rd_Xwtvar6ndrYZq4KAqrXs_FxbDzZWZBZNncyI/s1600/DSCN6656.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7F3IBbTw4_WqGLIg2vuaBOLxWYn3BLHI6M6pne8hYBcZ-fQIRMe8YfcN7j3zu1sEk5jfRhIr4Q50bLEDxvLBc12mr62Q8g_CBks78Rd_Xwtvar6ndrYZq4KAqrXs_FxbDzZWZBZNncyI/s640/DSCN6656.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Not an hour later, a Great Blue Heron arrived on the shoreline much to the chagrin of the local chipmunk population who began a chorus of loud clucking upon it's arrival.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg4DWsMBLTkfbAOV9dO0mP-l1s0-cUouCkiQIEwUN9hsNMj7RayxyXvWFxNvXv276xY3DV59mDweWDmPt9XTnt2hJGeBmSUVUSuQB5eySfIEezvEvMrX48uGqyakXEwJrUYrAw-RdIpEo/s1600/DSCN6665.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="584" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg4DWsMBLTkfbAOV9dO0mP-l1s0-cUouCkiQIEwUN9hsNMj7RayxyXvWFxNvXv276xY3DV59mDweWDmPt9XTnt2hJGeBmSUVUSuQB5eySfIEezvEvMrX48uGqyakXEwJrUYrAw-RdIpEo/s640/DSCN6665.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Other than chipmunks clucking, there isn't a sound … no boats, no floatplanes, no nothing … on this quiet Sunday evening.<br />
<br />Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14013998783032868744noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8345116980656936582.post-66959083146911183222015-05-21T14:25:00.000-04:002015-05-21T14:32:51.099-04:00TrainingFor our afternoon tea break we had some entertainment. <br />
Seven police boats arrived at the end of the bay just off the Point.<br />
We see them every year doing their exercises for the upcoming boating season.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqmPzz-Kz-770dQ9pFJS6C2chnBey7DrYCeBmMsifQn1WUVJMpqSV0JH7Az6pGX7jkjRLZqjl8Ud_ogam1y4yAMvn6E5WxtrUcu2nB5Tf0yOKvpVOwISy1TJ6NlhBuO1T4v9g3NCZiQp8/s1600/DSCN6646.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqmPzz-Kz-770dQ9pFJS6C2chnBey7DrYCeBmMsifQn1WUVJMpqSV0JH7Az6pGX7jkjRLZqjl8Ud_ogam1y4yAMvn6E5WxtrUcu2nB5Tf0yOKvpVOwISy1TJ6NlhBuO1T4v9g3NCZiQp8/s640/DSCN6646.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I could hear one person speaking to the others through a loud speaker but couldn't make out what he was saying.<br />
<br />
Then they all lined up like a school of fish.<br />

They are O.P.P. (Ontario Provincial Police) and they come from all over the province to train and practice their boating skills on our lake.<br />

One year, they came in our bay looking for a cottage address by water.<br />

Please note the freshly painted boathouse railing.<br />

Over the past few days they have been venturing out.<br />
While spring cleaning inside today, I noticed them popping up to watch me clean.<br />
<br />
Here is one baby out of the burrow and the top of another head is almost over the deck.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjoP6MGCHbhv7asComZ2bH6lrrshFz1l5GneDKmnkDL7JvNXnyyXl8pu6Nr-TQXxaPbUru6dsX4r_LKoWlTmLlXWXSqbrN7ghfiJEypCGAOFwxtCXsF-KrUu0Oql1W4AIMx7NW9Fdila0/s1600/DSCN6632.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="408" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjoP6MGCHbhv7asComZ2bH6lrrshFz1l5GneDKmnkDL7JvNXnyyXl8pu6Nr-TQXxaPbUru6dsX4r_LKoWlTmLlXWXSqbrN7ghfiJEypCGAOFwxtCXsF-KrUu0Oql1W4AIMx7NW9Fdila0/s640/DSCN6632.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Pop! The second little Chippie is almost out of the burrow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBqciwtgeeLWNO6EN9uHekSWsRaK2bzaoWARowglMj65Id9lTD4HKD0Xryk0K5DJO0ZtcBGfKhYQl6yavyoM35jzX6-Qn2OyQLyYjrJsusRSTEqcPYaLGH_T0lT8yS2uuQsVNZ9XgkbxU/s1600/DSCN6635.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBqciwtgeeLWNO6EN9uHekSWsRaK2bzaoWARowglMj65Id9lTD4HKD0Xryk0K5DJO0ZtcBGfKhYQl6yavyoM35jzX6-Qn2OyQLyYjrJsusRSTEqcPYaLGH_T0lT8yS2uuQsVNZ9XgkbxU/s640/DSCN6635.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I was unable to capture the third little fellow coming out.<br />
They sure scurry quickly and run off in all directions.<br />
One is by the post, one in the centre and another at the end of the deck step.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuH8Mi8BrewlqOVH0z8kwyNCCUD_SU_JFnfWbU0E72-kBXbBx3-hCtn48nYQ1jVvkwJpBWbemUgotDQsNM1TvZOS5jzFcjva8acGuieYNYT4xNUq2StaF7NI6vL6mT_Bx2HFbPUc3w3EA/s1600/DSCN6608.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="194" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuH8Mi8BrewlqOVH0z8kwyNCCUD_SU_JFnfWbU0E72-kBXbBx3-hCtn48nYQ1jVvkwJpBWbemUgotDQsNM1TvZOS5jzFcjva8acGuieYNYT4xNUq2StaF7NI6vL6mT_Bx2HFbPUc3w3EA/s640/DSCN6608.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
While I was taking a photo of this little one, the fourth one came out.<br />
<br />
Earlier, I watched all four poking their heads out of their burrow at the same time. Sure is funny to see.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
There he is. Number 4.<br />
They are so small but have their adult fur colouring.<br />
Mini Chippies<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheUGWJioLKwvbK0QOKqgVqEYnz1LOZGC3dORln4a-gOGKaNVdk4yh5kDCeCjCCqp_JocDWBSF9jWvnBqdgYuWqvBYS-G9nU7G26sSamNOK6g-YH2au1_BVc3rpS__yRE5VNk_-x8VVWO0/s1600/DSCN6627.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="328" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheUGWJioLKwvbK0QOKqgVqEYnz1LOZGC3dORln4a-gOGKaNVdk4yh5kDCeCjCCqp_JocDWBSF9jWvnBqdgYuWqvBYS-G9nU7G26sSamNOK6g-YH2au1_BVc3rpS__yRE5VNk_-x8VVWO0/s640/DSCN6627.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
They sure are cute watching them scurry around checking out what's going on above ground.<br />
<br />

There was a time when I liked Impressionists art. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then migrated to the Group of Seven. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But lately Charles Pachter is my most favourite artist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We went to his studio in Orillia today and here's a quick and abbreviated tour of the art we saw.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off was a moose on a door. His moose looks better than ours. However all the doors in our cottage are much like this door … hmmmm…..do I dare?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qibCSnkbJS1wkJfqJO4HLZmzzYrOBEqZz7LDU9j2fsciO525P31if26tzSC1WFQpEU8wPJi0K4cRnMpxwt1ff5aNfH40sqotTrvOxh4dGGyDG0nFuemK7y7I-LQ5ZojmkULYeJRM6-w/s1600/IMG_5109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6qibCSnkbJS1wkJfqJO4HLZmzzYrOBEqZz7LDU9j2fsciO525P31if26tzSC1WFQpEU8wPJi0K4cRnMpxwt1ff5aNfH40sqotTrvOxh4dGGyDG0nFuemK7y7I-LQ5ZojmkULYeJRM6-w/s640/IMG_5109.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
His work also includes metal sculpture.<br />
We nearly bought this piece. Maybe we'll go back and get it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7ma1y2ov13x4k32Tlo1ZuJvOOrFXQXLKVafLB2HhTJGw63O-RzHhJoR6eW0zsQKHaiZTbNM5yjHwuZVGJyA-8bDKb0JPfRE6slOew8SUdrroxffynrq1GrRGo7qybccKjhZio3QCAMU/s1600/IMG_5110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7ma1y2ov13x4k32Tlo1ZuJvOOrFXQXLKVafLB2HhTJGw63O-RzHhJoR6eW0zsQKHaiZTbNM5yjHwuZVGJyA-8bDKb0JPfRE6slOew8SUdrroxffynrq1GrRGo7qybccKjhZio3QCAMU/s640/IMG_5110.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Moose are a constant in his work.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The Canadian flag is also regularly featured in his body of work.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuSVTkAbTDgFwvfwWX11VXd5B1AwZKbUcjWAmNIZqpajPGaEca_IM01Tkb7cLYOjaJBIAYERYTBfHdg4rLBrWLpXnSkYo71zfp3EdLBRd2RUnDsEQ_JguxMDwEoGSdNmelxkuV_6Lk4lg/s1600/IMG_5112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuSVTkAbTDgFwvfwWX11VXd5B1AwZKbUcjWAmNIZqpajPGaEca_IM01Tkb7cLYOjaJBIAYERYTBfHdg4rLBrWLpXnSkYo71zfp3EdLBRd2RUnDsEQ_JguxMDwEoGSdNmelxkuV_6Lk4lg/s640/IMG_5112.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And so is the Queen.<br />
This piece is called "Decisions, decisions."<br />
<br />
It's must be true that being a Monarch, one has to spend more time deciding what tiara or hat to wear as opposed to what shoes to wear.<br />
The Queen never has to decide about a necklace though. She always, always wears a string of pearls.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtNJQ6w7AM6bJAorQpiRIB3JY2EDsG58HaDHvKQSzoLijA7ME-HxF6bx6ZJg8JeYPSW7tkBsRGlaM5zqeIL7D0pQT8ImwqfytJy01OKFGndG0Z-3QMhyr210dDjs7gLJzZisDw6pGXU_o/s1600/IMG_5113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtNJQ6w7AM6bJAorQpiRIB3JY2EDsG58HaDHvKQSzoLijA7ME-HxF6bx6ZJg8JeYPSW7tkBsRGlaM5zqeIL7D0pQT8ImwqfytJy01OKFGndG0Z-3QMhyr210dDjs7gLJzZisDw6pGXU_o/s640/IMG_5113.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here'a good shot of a Moose inside his gallery.<br />
Notice the Queen on the moose in the background? We have that piece.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzL4Okf9Fc-Hf-z8LVO1IOmMv0-5f4fFKz4R8Gd6hSuh4JqPu9n4VoWeDHW-jfY95JXuY3O95PEH0A2YWUydQO5aBU8MO0YZW20ZuBamqOGoi4hTslggGXWV7qSLjAoAamgXR2qJLNth8/s1600/IMG_5114.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzL4Okf9Fc-Hf-z8LVO1IOmMv0-5f4fFKz4R8Gd6hSuh4JqPu9n4VoWeDHW-jfY95JXuY3O95PEH0A2YWUydQO5aBU8MO0YZW20ZuBamqOGoi4hTslggGXWV7qSLjAoAamgXR2qJLNth8/s640/IMG_5114.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Lots of tension in this piece.<br />
Tension much like the painting done by Alex Colville,<a href="http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.alexcolville.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/alex_colville_1954_horse_and_train.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.alexcolville.ca/gallery/alex_colville_1954_horse_and_train/&h=454&w=600&tbnid=V5GhhO6467nyFM:&zoom=1&tbnh=160&tbnw=211&usg=__ccpRDRL9dKYOAyX2fkxSe-co3mc=&docid=AETzn90XMPYfOM&itg=1"> 'Horse and Train'</a><br />
Given moose have bad eyesight, this may not end up well for the moose.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This one made me smile. 'State of the Tart'.<br />
What could be more Canadian than Butter Tarts?<br />

I would love to sit down with him and hear all his stories about meeting the Royals. He told us one today.<br />
Apparently, Princess Anne asked him what she would hold on to if she rode a moose without antlers. Charlie replied that it's all about the "thighs".<br />
She sent him a note later expressing her amusement at their conversation. The note as on the wall of the gallery.<br />
<br />
Truly a charming man and his art is exceptional and uniquely Canadian.<br />
<br />
In the end we bought one the books he's illustrated for Margaret Atwood.<br />
She's a giant in the Canadian literary world. I don'k think you can pass grade 12 in this country without having read something by Atwood.<br />

As for Susanna Moodie, her book "Roughing it in the Bush" truly resonates with me.Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14013998783032868744noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8345116980656936582.post-39423229584361279452015-05-15T19:16:00.001-04:002015-05-15T19:16:19.425-04:00Deer!We haven't seen any deer around here for months. No one has.<br />
<br />
This morning I was sure I heard a loud deer-like snort coming from the woods. Lucy started barking too. Upon further investigation, I didn't see a thing even though Lucy kept barking.<br />
<br />
Then tonight around 7 pm we saw 2 deer crossing the road.<br />
<br />
My camera wasn't working properly (operator error) and the flash kept going off but here's the photo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtiBsBlChLYpu3S-KDTZW1FHHK9UtvqKsfrDQMcugyf1BydEoPDrhJm6BvTPByOkkA9UTYzkrMx0FhxBxiXQjTJ9MtCc9eBte5W5Y9LhV238w-miCwC9vHhwLRgtUOe1SHaRq1ePuzKB8/s1600/IMG_5101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="540" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtiBsBlChLYpu3S-KDTZW1FHHK9UtvqKsfrDQMcugyf1BydEoPDrhJm6BvTPByOkkA9UTYzkrMx0FhxBxiXQjTJ9MtCc9eBte5W5Y9LhV238w-miCwC9vHhwLRgtUOe1SHaRq1ePuzKB8/s640/IMG_5101.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When I figured out how to make the flash stay off, I got another photo. Right over the tail end of the deer in the foreground is the head of a smaller deer, perhaps her young one from last year.<br />
<br />
They camouflage so well in the forest.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFNi-AxEVQkMnhml0orR2Cgsw2bt31HLCfV87ENuiUmbucO5s6cXr7-BS3NyGLi3qUbXF5ngZLGCUCoze-0boY5lWBH9AfhehMw0Tlb7AaQk9iTc_y1NeJ64JWqiuy_98RzpxSzLPVVxc/s1600/IMG_5107.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFNi-AxEVQkMnhml0orR2Cgsw2bt31HLCfV87ENuiUmbucO5s6cXr7-BS3NyGLi3qUbXF5ngZLGCUCoze-0boY5lWBH9AfhehMw0Tlb7AaQk9iTc_y1NeJ64JWqiuy_98RzpxSzLPVVxc/s640/IMG_5107.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These may be the only 2 deer around here. A far cry from previous years when there were 30+ in the local herd.<br />
The coywolves seem to have moved on so maybe these two will be around all summer.<br />

<br />
PetBoy was eager to do a cottage craft, so he put the boards together and screwed two other boards along the backside to hold them all in place.<br />
<br />
Then using a small amount of Minwax, he stained it black wiping a little of the paint off as he went along.<br />
<br />
I found a moose silhouette graphic and we drove to town to have it blown up 300% at the local print shop. It cost $7.90.<br />
<br />
Then David cut out the outline making a stencil and laid it over the stained boards. Using red paint leftover from a cottage craft project done years ago, filled in the cut out section.<br />
<br />
Voila!<br />
<br />
Moose Head wall art at an affordable price.<br />

<br />
It's kind of heavy so it will need a heavy duty wire to hang it up.<br />
<br />
I was thinking we could make more. Maybe smaller ones. <br />
Like maybe even 4 small ones in varying colours like an Andy Warhol did, only make them moose heads instead of Marilyn heads.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Cottage crafts are always fun. This one is going to be hung up in a bedroom that's decorated in black and red plaid.<br />
<br />

<br />
I think I'll make some pillows using the same method but maybe have a deer head and maybe a bear.<br />

<br />
The first sighting was a male fox.<br />
Male foxes are also known as dogs, tods or reynards.<br />
<br />
He had a beautiful coat of fur and overall, looked really healthy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlK_hxjjU8ZubTEqc3e_pM3f2_gqOj2bzpSF7J3XXagXQUAX2bhZdIO5TMYd9RSl2Feg0IGUtgacimTtyYyAbne0wexmJa9BNW9uXqFsW3X1GH5h4dzHGX0aIPKHGaRnKSbGOoViEeRS0/s1600/IMG_1701+copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlK_hxjjU8ZubTEqc3e_pM3f2_gqOj2bzpSF7J3XXagXQUAX2bhZdIO5TMYd9RSl2Feg0IGUtgacimTtyYyAbne0wexmJa9BNW9uXqFsW3X1GH5h4dzHGX0aIPKHGaRnKSbGOoViEeRS0/s640/IMG_1701+copy.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then a little further along the road in a new wetland area, thanks to some beavers, I spotted a grand female moose standing very still in the trees.<br />
<br />
Moose have bad eyesight but their acute hearing and sense of smell makes up for that shortcoming. Therefore we were careful not to make any noise when we opened the car window to get the photos least we scare it away.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE_xcKdMjhA5sueeZe9BcKp5w_IWYfjm9XpB-kQPmaz8Ai-evCVTKRMRbT94j8CW0ldK-za657hxTcTFG45B8hOreSGfe34vBZOub7HPQ6tPDmGhDU6MDe3qgAJZFraVEUMpYnWLqDDi0/s1600/IMG_1703+copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE_xcKdMjhA5sueeZe9BcKp5w_IWYfjm9XpB-kQPmaz8Ai-evCVTKRMRbT94j8CW0ldK-za657hxTcTFG45B8hOreSGfe34vBZOub7HPQ6tPDmGhDU6MDe3qgAJZFraVEUMpYnWLqDDi0/s640/IMG_1703+copy.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It is odd how the moose in Algonquin Park will tolerate many onlookers and cars parking by the roadside to get photos of them but our local moose take off at the slightest noise.<br />
<br />
Perhaps the Park moose are from Central Casting. Mere props to encourage tourists.<br />
Our local moose are the real deal. They're just plain old scardy cats.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This photo of a bull moose was taken in Algonquin Park May 30th, 2013.<br />
Heck, even their moose can read where to cross on the road for Pete's sake.<br />

<br />
The woods are filled with small bright green sugar maple seedlings. <br />
It almost looks like a green shag carpet is covering the forest floor.<br />
Bright green leaf buds are swelling on the tree branches too.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuHpASTf46gN26xhMimmd9GF1KMhEfRmTV7bGfr22WPv5JtoAQGowL-qGVRn6o42INQ4ooW180_VAtuV7v00viw_3ADjM5UGhFjWT6MsPDP4jZXdLmsxjXLw4D5fEYmbepxry2VTNSPAE/s1600/DSC_7408+copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuHpASTf46gN26xhMimmd9GF1KMhEfRmTV7bGfr22WPv5JtoAQGowL-qGVRn6o42INQ4ooW180_VAtuV7v00viw_3ADjM5UGhFjWT6MsPDP4jZXdLmsxjXLw4D5fEYmbepxry2VTNSPAE/s640/DSC_7408+copy.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Also growing in the woods are lots of trilliums, our provincial flower.<br />
<br />
There were never many trilliums here in the past as the deer ate them. But now that the deer have disappeared, trilliums are thriving once again.<br />
