They're back!

We haven't seen a deer since late July. Apparently, most of our local herd swam across the lake to Christmas Island to escape the wolves. They've been hiding out there ever since and eating everything in sight, including the beautiful gardens belonging to some very wealthy cottagers.

Tonight at dinner time Lucy informed us there was a deer on the septic bed.

It was Stompy!

She was wearing her winter colours and her coat is certainly thickening up.

She ate our day lilies vigorously and when I tossed her a chopped up apple, I swear, she wagged her tail.

In the woods were two more does. They were very timid and didn't wander closer.

The deer are 'yarding up' right now and the annual rut will begin soon.
When the temperature drops, the females go in to estrus and the chase is on!

We're keeping a watchful eye out for the bucks. They'll be coming through anytime now.

  1. Oh, I bet you're happy! Always so thrilling when 'out' animals return! I look forward to more pictures in the coming weeks.
