Gazebo Trasher

There are several Pileated Woodpeckers that come to the suet feeder on a daily basis.  I spotted this fellow out the kitchen window so I grabbed my camera but not my glasses and that's why the photos are out of focus. Oh, and there's a flare from the window glass too but if you take off your glasses, you won't notice!

This is the biggest Pileated that comes around and the most destructive too.  There are huge holes in the trees around here and now also in the Gazebo.

Here sure has a big tuft of bright red hair.  Kind of like Ronald McDonald don't you think?

Pileated Woodpeckers carve out holes for different purposes.

For nesting cavities, which are new each year, they carve out one large elliptical hole with a deep cavity inside a dead tree.

For a spot to roost to get out of the elements, they will carve out several oblong shaped holes in the same tree. The many holes are also exits in case predator, like a Barred Owl, shows up.

And the other type of holes they create are feeding cavities. They primarily feed on carpenter ants and beetle larve found in trees, fallen logs and.....................

..........Gazebos!
