Morning walk

Out the kitchen window while making the morning coffee,  I spotted these two Pileated Woodpeckers taking turns pecking at the suet feeder. Fun entertainment!

Because it was a such a lovely sunny morning, while the coffee was brewing Lucy and I went outside for a walk looking for signs of spring.

On the boathouse sun deck, Lucy found this bone frozen in ice.  It must be from the deer that was killed back in January.  Perhaps a Raven dropped it?

The lake sure is a solid block of ice.  It was -6 oC this morning and tomorrow we're supposed to get 5-10cm of snow.  I doubt spring is ever going to arrive this here this year.

Our neighbour has a bubbler going but it doesn't seem to be making a very huge dint in the ice.

However the open water makes for a perfect watering hole for a raccoon.

And swimming hole for a Mallard.

Inside the boathouse the ice is thick and blue.

Perhaps an otter found this clam (mussel) in the open water and dined in privacy inside the boathouse ... and with a side order of acorns.

The only sign of spring Lucy and I found was this little bit of green from a Daylily poking up through the leaves and sheltered by some granite.

We did hear a Robin during our journey but not the sound of sap dripping.  It's frozen up again.

  1. I feel for you...most of the time I am a bit envious...for some reason I would love to be way north for one winter...I know that would probably be enough to last a life time because right now I am so glad we are having spring weather. But there will forever be a part of me that wants to just try it.

My hyacinths are blooming...Roger has been out all day in short sleeved t-shirt...I still need long sleeves.
