Since late spring, our Mourning Doves disappeared.
Over the winter we had lots of them, basking in the sunlight on the driveway, having board meetings in the branches of a red pine and feeding under the bird feeders.
No doubt a flying predator invited them out for dinner and they never came back.
Until now.
New ones are coming around to fill the Mourning Dove void.
Meanwhile our Hummingbird population is dwindling.
Since late spring, we had lots of hummers and their numbers grew when the babies fledged in mid-summer.
About two weeks ago all the males left.
And with autumn approaching the females will soon be going.
I'll miss watching their acrobatic flying as they chase each other away from the feeders.
I just love mourning doves...such a soft-eyed bird. I don't put out hummingbird 'food' because I am afraid one of my cats would nab one...but I still have one or two that come. And a lot of morns it comes and looks in the window here...I suppose it is looking at a reflection but I don't know what of...
