Pie hole.

On our way to town today to check on our losing lottery tickets, we noticed that this tree along the roadside had been recently excavated.

The work was done by a Pileated Woodpecker.

They make several rectangular holes in a tree for nesting and some of the holes are for a quick escape from predators.

I'm not sure how one is supposed to pronounce Pileated.

PILL-e-ated or PIE-le-ated.

I'll go with PIE-le-ated, hence the PIE holes.
