The end is near

http://aphelis.net/david-sipress-nov-2011/
….the end of the snow squalls and wintry weather that is.

Last night we got around 12cm of new snow.

We're also getting some fairly sizeable icicles. There's an ice dam that's started to form on the roof that been caused by the fireplace flue heating the roof that's packed deep with snow.

Oh, and a side note, the fireplace fan is broken and a replacement is on backorder. No one knows when it will be back in stock.  This is the fireplace that heats the whole cottage.

I managed to get a photo of a Blue Jay pecking at the soil in a window box this morning.
They eat seed or peanuts first then look for dirt. Must be a palate cleanser.

Right now it's -14oC outside.  However it's supposed to warm up to +10oC and rain. If the rain doesn't melt all of the snow the remaining snow will turn to solid ice when the temperature drops again.

So today we're going to blow out the moat (in above photo the moat is full to the top), shovel all the stairs and decks (for the 5th time this week) and maybe even rake the roof to get some snow off ahead of the big melt, which might not melt everything.

Oh the joys of living in Paradise.

  1. oh brother, what a way to enter winter. We are all so happy not to be living just south of Buffalo though, snow at 8 ft and counting. Yikes! We only have a dusting with cold temps, but supposed to go to 60 by Monday. Our friends have a store that may carry your fan. Perhaps you can contact them via email (most phone services would carry international charges)and ask if they have the fan and what the cost of shipping would be? The store is The Stovery at http://www.thestovery.com/ This store is very well respected. Tell them Howard Smith's wife Brenda is a sewing internet friend and recommended them. Hope they can help you.
