Past 4 days

Our bay is starting to freeze over again. When it does, it makes unusual noises.  Sometimes it sounds like excelsior paper crumpling. Other times it sounds like thousands of tiny chandelier crystals tinkling. This time it sounded like a taut wire snapping, so we went out to investigate.

It's open water along the shoreline starting at the neighbours dock.

It's open in front of our boathouse.

The sound we heard must have been the ice opening up and creating a snake like looking crack all the way out into the bay.

The next morning we heard crumpling sounds. This time it looked like there were crop circles on the bay.

This one looked like an RCAF roundel.

The morning of New Years Eve snow squalls were in the forecast so we decided to quickly drive in to town before they arrived.

A little bit of snow was falling making the woods look so beautiful.

The snow was intermittent. The sun would come out, then a few flurries.

We could see the squalls heading out way in between patches of blue sky.

When we were part way to town a squall hit and it was a whiteout on the highway. We could barely see the headlights of oncoming vehicles.

Then we couldn't see oncoming lights at all.

It was almost noon and even the sun was having trouble shining through the squall.

There was plenty of snow on the ground New Years Eve.
Watching the fireworks displays around the world on TV gave us an idea to have our own. Since it was snowing  outside, we used the shelter of the Gazebo for our little display.

In the morning, everything was covered in deep snow.

More snow fell over night and we think easily 35cm of new snow has fallen over the last three days. Maybe more.
This little Nuthatch doesn't seem to mind though.

It sure is beautiful outside.
It looks like January should look.

Our bay is frozen but it's still open way out on the main part of the lake.

Milder temperatures and rain is in the forecast for Sunday so much of the snow will disappear and it may take a few weeks for the main part of the lake to freeze.

  1. It is scary to be driving in conditions where you cannot see 20 ft ahead...whether it is snow, fog, or rain!
