La Dump

We don't get garbage pick up during the winter months. That's okay with us because we enjoying going to the town dump because you never know what you'll see or find.

Last week, I found these beautiful 6 antique glass dessert plates in the Re-Use Centre.

(Well, maybe they aren't antiques but they sure look it.)

When we were leaving, I spotted an unkindness of Ravens (a constable of Ravens? a conspiracy of Ravens?) sitting in the trees and right next to them was a HUGE bird. It was at least 2' high.

At first I thought it might be a Great Horned Owl given it's size but upon further examination, it didn't have ear tufts so I knew it wasn't an owl.

It was much bigger than the Red Tail or Red Shouldered Hawks we usually see. It was eagle sized.
Maybe it's a Golden Eagle?
At any rate, I've posted photo on the bird message board asking for an i.d.

We did see 1 adult Bald Eagle and 3 juvenile Bald Eagles just further along the road. The 3 juveniles were soaring and chasing each other in what looked to be a game of tag.

Here's a photo of the adult Baldy. Unfortunately in this photo the white tail and head isn't visible.
Look at that massive wingspan. It must be at least 4' across, maybe more.
Awesome.

Edit:
Got a response on the bird message board and the bird in question is an immature Bald Eagle.

Apparently, it takes almost 4 years for baby baldies to get their adult colours.

  1. Those re-use centers are great. Wish we had one where I live. My parents go to one, outside Parry Sound, and they have picked me up all kinds of things. What a treat to see those Bald Eagles!
