Mercer in da Hood

It's the Gravenhurst Winter Carnival this weekend and a special guest this year is Rick Mercer.

There are winter events happening on Gull Lake, mid-town, Muskoka Bay and even down at the Severn Bridge.
I stopped at Gull Lake to see the snowmobile water jump.

Well, I should have guessed, Rick Mercer was there as a contestant planning to jump over a long stretch of open water in a snowmobile.

There were a lot of people in front of me, but here Rick is revving up the snowmobile engine.

He got an earful from the fellow in the orange toque on how to perform this feat.

Then off he went…..not too fast I might add which indicated the outcome...

…not even half-way!
Into the icy cold water of Gull Lake both Rick and the sled sank.

It's not too deep where he went in. You can see him standing but you can't hear him yelling about the cold water!

They hauled him unceremoniously out of the lake and he landed like a beached seal on the ice.
He was saying something to the cameraman which we will probably hear when it airs sometime in the next month or two.

He was soaked. Look at his bare hands on the ice and the gap around his waist. He must have been cold. Icy water makes skin feel it's burning.

He scampered off to his warm, waiting van thanking all the folks around him.

On his way to go somewhere to get changed into warm, dry clothes, he took the time to say hello to a woman who was manning the gate to Gull Lake.

Meanwhile in the middle of town there were bed races.
This one is from the local plumbing company.

And hot on their heels … or should I say bed rails … was a group of people dressed like Vikings.

I don't know where they were from but they sure were noisy and having such fun.

We'll go back later today - if we can find a parking spot - and get more photos.
