The Big Melt

The Big Melt is on.
Warmer temperatures and rains have arrived.
The lake is slowly melting and snow on the ground disappearing.

While flood warnings have been issued, our lake is down at least 4 feet.
So when the melt is done we may not get flooded like we have been in the past few years.

The lake is slowly breaking up too.
Our neighbour on one side has a bubbler and there's a fast flowing creek from a neighbour's property on the other side and we have open water at long last.

The ice on the shoreline is really thick. Maybe 3 feet or more thick. However there are little chunks breaking away creating little icebergs.

If you're Ralph and Muriel, these ice floes make perfect little rafts.

This years Ralph is particularly handsome.
I'll get Dave to get a better photo of him.

Canada Geese have shown up too to take advantage of the in the open water.

Meanwhile in the woods, there is still lots of snow but it's melting …. slowly.

Woodpeckers have been busy drilling holes in the trees for their nests.

And squirrels have been ripping bark off trees.
I don't know why they do that. Maybe to line their nest with bark? Or maybe they do it, just 'cuz.

  1. I can't imagine having that much snow now...Roger mowed the yard today. And I hung out two loads of clothes. And now when I tell you this...you will know I am crazy--I would love to spend one winter season up north! Just to see what it is like. I know it is all about what we are used to....
