On our way in to town today, we spotted this fellow chasing some ladies into the woods.
A male turkey is called a Tom, a female a Hen, young turkey's are called Poults, a young male is called a Jake and a young female is called a Jenny.
In 1984, 274 wild turkey's were re-introudced in Ontario. They are so hardy, their population is now well over 100,00.
Muskoka was not their historical area, but there are plenty around here now despite the harsh winters.
Right now it's wild turkey hunting season. And the Tom in the above photo is hunting for a good time!
You know what I got today? A wild turkey caller! A weird little gizmo you put in your mouth ostensibly to make turkey calls. I haven't been able to work it yet but it does encourage vast amounts of spit.
ReplyDeleteWe have turkeys at our house, too.
Turkey hunting season here, too...and Roger only got to hunt two days before his back has him out of commission.
ReplyDeleteI learned something new here...did not know a young female was called a Jenny...
