Remembrance Day

In town, there was a Remembrance Day parade and service.

Veterans marched to a pipe band along the main street.
We could hear them coming all the way from Legion Hall long before we could see them.

They stopped at the Cenotaph at the Opera House.

Two Veterans placed wreaths in honour of the men from Gravenhurst who gave their lives during WWI and WWII.

Then they marched along the street back to the Legion Hall for a service at 11a.m.

And the whole time, all the spectators clapped.

  1. My dear grandfather, Lemuel London, also fought for Canada in WWI. Such a young man at the time, he was gassed (mustard) in the trenches, France I believe, awoke in hospital in England so perhaps your granddad saved mine. A possibility! He wrote home almost weekly and all his letters have been saved. When one of my aunts asked if he had seen the enemy he wrote back of hearing the "Jerries" talking in their trenches, they were that close. so young, so stoic, so brave yet he had to be terrified. He never spoke of his time in the war but his letters home spoke for him. I have a nice picture of him in uniform that I keep on display for all the younger family members to learn of him. As his only grand daughter , we adored each other. My true to life hero.

  2. That's interesting to hear about your grandfather's experience. After watching the CBC special by Peter Mansbridge on Tuesday, I have a new appreciation for the bravery of those young men, especially those in the underground subway.
