Spring is on hold

For the next couple of days it's not supposed to go above freezing.  Typical March weather ... spring taunts and then winter returns.

Last night we got about 5 cm of snow.  A departure from the rain and thaw we had the other day.

Everything is covered in a light dusting of snow and even though is overcast and gray, is sure is pretty outside.

The sap has stopped running too. We got all of the sap we collected last week boiled and pancake ready. Next week it looks like it will warm up and start running again.

The temporary setback hasn't completely stopped spring from arriving though.  The Chipmunks are out of hibernation.  Last year we named this fellow "Stubbs" because he only has half a tail. It's was good to see he made it through the winter, and looking rather plump too.

I've noticed some birds are back too like the Crows.  They've been hanging around watching the Blue Jays collect peanuts from the railing.

And when the Jays either hide or drop the peanut, the Crow swoops in to steal the treat.  You'd think that for such a large menacing looking bird, they'd be bold enough to grab the peanuts for themselves. I guess deep down they are just chickens.

Meanwhile indoors we are staying toasty warm.  We still have enough wood to last for the rest of the month.

March Wind

March wind is a jolly fellow;
He likes to joke and play.
He turns umbrellas inside out
And blows men's hats away.
He calls the pussy willows
And whispers in each ear,
"Wake up you lazy little seeds;
Don't you know that spring is here?"
