Winter hardship.

Wildlife took a big hit over this past nasty winter.  However I am happy to see our Chipmunks are thriving and in the case of this female, preggers.

She'll probably have 3 or 5 babies in the next week or so.  Then in about 6 weeks we'll see mini-chippies running around.

Just look at her chubby little tummy and her side flanks.

I was speaking to Lucy's vet the other day and she informed me that when winter conditions are difficult for deer as it was this year,  pregnant does abort in an effort to stay alive. Coywolves have made a huge dint in our local deer herd so between predation and starvation there may not be many deer around here.

Because the Great Lakes were completely frozen over, there wasn't open water for waterfowl that overwinter here. Many people reported finding ducks that literally fell out of the sky, exhausted from trying to find open water.
I wonder if we'll see many ducks this year.

At least our chipmunks survived the winter and seem to be doing well.

  1. It sure was a hard winter...Roger has been turkey hunting and not seeing anything at all in the normal spots. Not even in the spots we see them when just out and about so we are wondering if all the snow we had took a toll on them.
